Updating Plugins
Frequently Asked Questions
Security & Privacy
Is my site data safe?
Yes. UpWiz only sends the minimum data each feature needs: plugin names/slugs and version numbers for changelog and vulnerability checks, plus your license key and changelog text for AI analysis.
UpWiz doesn’t send visitor data, post content, page content, or other site content to external services. See the Privacy article in the Security and Privacy section for the full breakdown.
What vulnerabilities does UpWiz check for?
UpWiz checks the WPVulnerability.net database for known WordPress plugin security issues from public sources. Results are cached for each plugin version for 6 hours, and background scans run twice daily for all installed plugins.
Does UpWiz affect WordPress admin or site performance?
No. UpWiz only loads on the UpWiz dashboard and settings pages. It doesn’t add scripts, styles, or admin bar items to other admin screens. The first dashboard visit in a session may run a quick background refresh. UpWiz also doesn’t add anything to the public-facing side of your site.

What vulnerabilities does UpWiz check for?
UpWiz checks the WPVulnerability.net database for known WordPress plugin CVEs aggregated from public sources. Results are cached per plugin and version for 6 hours. Background scans run twice daily across all your installed plugins — not just those with pending updates — so you’re alerted to new vulnerabilities even before an update is available.
Does UpWiz affect WordPress admin or site performance?
No. UpWiz only loads on its own dashboard and settings pages — it doesn’t inject scripts, styles, or admin bar items anywhere else in the WordPress admin. Your first dashboard visit in a session triggers a background update check, but that runs server-side and doesn’t slow down page loads for visitors. UpWiz adds nothing to the public-facing side of your site.

What vulnerabilities does UpWiz check for?
UpWiz checks known WordPress plugin CVEs through the UpWiz API vulnerability resolver. The resolver uses Wordfence as the primary source and WPVulnerability as a fallback, with results cached per plugin and version for 6 hours. Background scans run twice daily across all your installed plugins — not just those with pending updates — so you’re alerted to new vulnerabilities even before an update is available.

UpWiz checks known WordPress plugin CVEs through the UpWiz vulnerability resolver. It uses Wordfence as the primary source and WPVulnerability as a fallback, with results cached per plugin and version for 6 hours.
When vulnerability monitoring is enabled, UpWiz refreshes the dashboard’s background vulnerability count on a twicedaily schedule for plugins that currently have pending updates. On-demand checks also run when you open a plugin’s details drawer.

Is my site data safe?
UpWiz only sends the data needed for the feature you are using. It does not send visitor data or your site’s content just to show update information.
For the fuller breakdown of what can be sent for licensing, AI analysis, and vulnerability checks, see Privacy Overview: What Data UpWiz Collects.
What vulnerabilities does UpWiz check for?
UpWiz checks known public vulnerability information for the plugin version you have installed and the version you are planning to update to.
This is most useful when a public disclosure already exists. Coverage can be more limited for some premium plugins. If you want ongoing email alerts, enable vulnerability monitoring in UpWiz → Settings → Alerts & reports.
Does UpWiz affect WordPress admin or site performance?
UpWiz is focused on its own dashboard and settings screens. It does not add visitor-facing scripts or change the public side of your site.
Like any update or monitoring tool, it can run checks when you ask for them or when you enable certain features, but it is designed to avoid turning normal admin use into constant overhead.

Licensing & Billing
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free gives you the full dashboard, vulnerability alerts, the changelog viewer, weekly email summaries, and 20 AI analyses per month.
Pro adds smart auto-updates with release delay, backup and one-click rollback, post-update health checks with automatic rollback on failure, enhanced AI analysis with security context, daily digest emails, and 200-500 AI analyses per month depending on plan tier. You can also start a 7-day free trial of all Pro features once per account.
Can I use UpWiz Free in production before deciding to upgrade?
Yes. Many site owners start on the Free plan for visibility and vulnerability alerts, then upgrade when they want safer automation or higher AI limits. The 7-day free trial also lets you try every Pro feature before you commit.
Does UpWiz Pro replace my existing backup plugin?
No. UpWiz Pro restore points are plugin-level file backups built for quick rollback when a plugin update goes wrong. They’re not a replacement for full-site backups.
Keep your existing full-site backup system, such as UpdraftPlus, Duplicator, or your host’s backup feature, alongside UpWiz. Plugin restore points and full-site backups solve different problems.
Can I use one Pro license on multiple sites?
It depends on your plan tier. The standard Pro plan covers one site. Pro Plus supports multiple site activations. Your current site limit is shown in UpWiz → Settings → License & Plan.
You can deactivate a site activation from the same tab to free up a slot before activating on a different site. You can also manage site activations from your account at upwiz.app/my-account.
What happens to my backups if I cancel or downgrade from Pro?
Backup files already on your server stay there when you downgrade. UpWiz doesn’t delete existing restore points. However, the Rollback feature, which restores from those backups, requires an active Pro or Trial plan.
On the Free plan, you can still view your restore points in Settings → Backups, but you can’t trigger a restore through UpWiz. Your backup files remain in your uploads directory unless you delete them yourself from the Rollbacks tab or via FTP.
Can I transfer my license to a different site?
Yes, for paid Pro licenses. On the old site, open UpWiz → Settings → License & Plan. If the UpWiz Pro addon shows a Deactivate button, click it to free that site’s activation. On the new site, enter the same key in License & Plan and click Validate. If the Pro addon shows its own activation box, click Activate there as well.
You can also manage Pro site activations from your account dashboard at upwiz.app/my-account. If you’re using a Free key, just enter it on the site where you want to use it and click Validate.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free gives you the full dashboard with changelog viewing, vulnerability alerts, weekly email summaries, and 20 AI risk analyses per month — enough for staying on top of a single site.
Pro adds smart auto-updates with release delay, one-click backup and rollback, post-update health checks with automatic rollback on failure, enhanced AI analysis with security context, daily digest emails, and 200-500 AI analyses per month depending on your plan tier.
Not sure yet? Free plan users can start a one-time 7-day trial that unlocks everything in Pro.
Can I use UpWiz Free in production before deciding to upgrade?
Yes. Starting on Free is a common path — you get real value from the dashboard, vulnerability alerts, and AI analysis right away. When you’re ready for automation or need higher AI limits, upgrading to Pro takes a few clicks and your existing license key carries over. The 7-day trial is also a good way to test Pro features on your actual site before you decide.

On the new site, enter the same key in License & Plan and click Validate. If the UpWiz Pro addon shows its own activation box on the new site, click Activate there too.
You can also manage Pro site activations from your account dashboard at upwiz.app/my-account. If you’re using a Free key, just enter it on the site where you want to use it and click Validate.

What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free gives you the dashboard, changelog viewing, vulnerability checks, weekly summary emails, and 20 AI analyses per month for one site.
Pro adds automation and recovery features such as smart auto-updates, release delay, maintenance windows, one-click manual rollback, auto-rollback on failure, daily digest emails, and 200 AI analyses per month for one site.
Pro Plus includes the same feature set as Pro, with support for up to 3 sites and 500 AI analyses per month. Free plan users can also start a one-time 7-day trial, then install the separate UpWiz Pro addon on the site to use those Pro-only features during the trial.

Can I use one Pro license on multiple sites?
It depends on your plan tier. The standard Pro plan covers one site. Pro Plus supports up to 3 sites. Your current limit is shown in UpWiz → Settings → Account & plan → License & sync.
You can manage site activations from your account at upwiz.app/my-account. If the UpWiz Pro addon exposes a deactivate action on the site, using it can also free a slot before you activate the key somewhere else.
What happens to my backups if I cancel or downgrade from Pro?
Backup files already on your server stay there when you downgrade — UpWiz doesn’t delete existing restore points. However, triggering a rollback from those backups requires an active Pro or Trial plan.
On the Free plan, you can still view your restore points in Settings → Backups & rollback, but you can’t trigger a restore through UpWiz. Existing restore points remain in the private backup location on your server unless you delete them yourself from the Rollbacks tab or through normal server access.
Can I transfer my license to a different site?
Yes. On the old site, manage the activation from your UpWiz account or use the deactivate action exposed by the UpWiz Pro addon if it is available there. That frees up the site’s activation slot.
On the new site, install UpWiz and, if needed, UpWiz Pro, then enter the same key in UpWiz → Settings → Account & plan → License & sync and click Validate. If the UpWiz Pro addon shows its own activation prompt on the new site, use the same key there too.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free is for visibility and safer decisions on one site: changelog review, known vulnerability checks, 20 AI analyses per month, alerts, and restore points before updates.
Pro adds protected automation and recovery for one site: safe auto-updates, release delay, health checks, rollback, daily digest, and 200 AI analyses per month.
Pro Plus gives the same protected workflow for up to 3 sites and 500 AI analyses per month.
Trial and paid features on the site require the separate UpWiz Pro add-on from My Licenses.
Can I use UpWiz Free in production before deciding to upgrade?
Yes. That is a normal way to start. Free gives you useful visibility before you update, so you can learn which plugins deserve closer review before you move into automation.
When you want safer unattended updates and faster recovery tools, you can start a trial or move to Pro without changing your whole workflow.
Does UpWiz Pro replace my existing backup plugin?
No. UpWiz restore points are for quick plugin recovery, not full-site disaster recovery.
Keep your normal host-level or full-site backup system in place. UpWiz is an extra layer for plugin update safety, not a replacement for a full backup strategy.
Can I use one Pro license on multiple sites?
It depends on your plan. Pro covers 1 site. Pro Plus covers up to 3 sites.
You can manage site activations from My Account. If you need more room, free a site slot or move to a plan that matches your portfolio.
What happens to my backups if I cancel or downgrade from Pro?
Your existing restore points stay on your server unless you delete them.
On Free, you can still see that those restore points exist, but rollback actions require an active Trial or Pro plan. Keep a separate full-site backup system in place regardless of plan changes.
Can I transfer my license to a different site?
Yes. Free the site activation in My Account if needed, then install UpWiz on the new site and enter the same key in UpWiz → Settings → Account & plan → License & sync.
If the plan includes site-based Pro features, also download
upwiz-pro.zipfrom My Licenses and install it on the new site. What is the difference between Free and Pro?

Updates & Automation
Can I exclude specific plugins from the UpWiz dashboard?
Yes. You can hide specific plugins from the UpWiz dashboard without affecting their availability in the native WordPress Updates screen or auto-update system.
Go to UpWiz → Settings → Auto-Updates → Exclusions and toggle Hidden next to any plugin. You can also click the eye icon on a plugin card in the dashboard to hide it immediately.
Should I auto-update every plugin immediately?
No – a gradual approach works best. Start with low-risk plugins (small utilities, analytics tools) to build confidence in the process, then expand coverage. Use the Release Delay setting to let the community identify issues before your site auto-updates. Reserve manual review for high-impact plugins such as your payment gateway, security plugin, or page builder.
How often does UpWiz check for plugin updates?
You can trigger a real-time check at any time by clicking Refresh in the dashboard header. In the background, WordPress automatically checks for plugin updates at regular intervals (typically every 12 hours via built-in wp-cron).
UpWiz’s auto-update processor runs twice daily by default. Pro users with an update schedule configured can restrict this to specific days and time windows.
Can I exclude specific plugins from the UpWiz dashboard?
Yes. Hiding a plugin removes it from the UpWiz dashboard view without affecting anything else — it still appears in the native WordPress Updates screen and remains eligible for updates there.
To hide a plugin, click the eye icon on its card in the dashboard, or go to UpWiz → Settings → Auto-Updates → Exclusions and toggle Hidden next to it. The change saves immediately.
Should I auto-update every plugin immediately?
No — a gradual approach works best. Start with smaller utility plugins to get comfortable with the process, then expand coverage. Use the Release Delay setting to give each update a window before it applies, so early-adopter feedback can surface any issues first. Reserve manual review for high-impact plugins such as your payment gateway, security plugin, or page builder.

You can trigger a check at any time by clicking Refresh Update List in the dashboard header. In the background, WordPress checks for plugin updates on a regular schedule — typically every 12 hours.
UpWiz’s auto-update processor runs on a twicedaily cadence by default. If a Pro maintenance window is enabled, it switches to an hourly cadence so narrower allowed windows are easier to catch.
Can I exclude specific plugins from the UpWiz dashboard?
Yes. Use Hidden if you want a plugin removed from the UpWiz dashboard only. Use No Auto if you want it visible in UpWiz but never updated automatically by Pro.
You can manage both in UpWiz → Settings → Safe updates → Exclusions.
Should I auto-update every plugin immediately?
No. Start with lower-risk utility plugins first.
Keep checkout, login, security, membership, page builder, and heavily customized plugins on manual review until you trust the routine on your site. Release delay, exclusions, and rollback are there to help you expand carefully, not flip everything to hands-off on day one.
How often does UpWiz check for plugin updates?
You can refresh the list at any time from the dashboard.
Otherwise, UpWiz works with WordPress’s normal update checks, and Pro automation can also run in the background if you enable it. If timing matters on a busy site, use Pro scheduling and release delay instead of relying on an immediate update every time a vendor publishes a new version.

Setup & Support
Does UpWiz work with premium or commercial plugins?
Yes. UpWiz displays all plugins with pending updates, including premium plugins not hosted on WordPress.org. For these plugins, UpWiz shows a Visit Vendor button instead of an Update button, since premium plugins use their own update delivery systems.
Changelog fetching and AI analysis may not be available for premium plugins without public changelogs, but vulnerability checking still works when the plugin slug is in the WPVulnerability.net database.
Where do I go if I am stuck during setup?
Start with the Site Health tab (UpWiz → Settings → Site Health) for quick setup checks. The Troubleshooting section covers the most common issues, including connection errors, AI analysis failures, and license activation problems.
If you’re still stuck, reach out through the support page at upwiz.app/support with your site URL, WordPress version, and a short description of the issue.
Do I need an UpWiz account to use the plugin?
No, not for the basics. You can use the changelog viewer and vulnerability checks without connecting an UpWiz account.
You only need a free license key if you want AI analysis or plan-based features. Once a key is connected, UpWiz can validate your plan and track your AI usage.
Does UpWiz work with premium or commercial plugins?
Yes. UpWiz shows all plugins with pending updates, including premium plugins not hosted on WordPress.org. For premium plugins, UpWiz displays a Visit Vendor button instead of a direct Update button, since these plugins use their own update delivery systems that require authentication.
Vulnerability checking works for premium plugins covered by the WPVulnerability.net database. Changelog fetching and AI analysis require a public changelog, so they may not be available for all premium plugins.

Do I need an UpWiz account to use the plugin?
Not for the basics. You can view changelogs and run vulnerability checks without connecting a license key.
A free license key is required to use AI analysis and plan-based features. Getting one takes about a minute during onboarding — just enter your email and UpWiz sends the key automatically.
Vulnerability checking works for premium plugins when they are covered by public vulnerability sources available to the resolver. Changelog fetching and AI analysis support both WordPress.org and supported external vendor/docs/release-note sources, but they can still be unavailable when no usable public source exists.

Does UpWiz work with premium or commercial plugins?
Yes. UpWiz can still show premium or commercial plugins with pending updates.
What changes is the amount of direct help available: some premium plugins will use a Visit Vendor button instead of a direct update button, and changelog, vulnerability, or AI coverage may be limited when the vendor does not publish enough public release information.
Where do I go if I am stuck during setup?
Start in UpWiz → Settings → Site health & data and then work through the Troubleshooting articles for license, AI, update, or connectivity problems.
If you still need help, contact UpWiz Support and include your site URL, WordPress version, PHP version, UpWiz version, and the exact error message or screenshot.
Do I need an UpWiz account to use the plugin?
Not for the basics. You can use the dashboard, read changelogs, and review known vulnerability information without a paid plan.
A free or paid key is required for AI analysis and plan-based features. If you do not already have a key, UpWiz can help you register Free during onboarding.
